Online Education Requirements

An online education always has certain minimal requirements in order for a student to succeed and do well, but a graphics design school online raises that bar slightly to a new level. Just as being a lawyer or a doctor or writer isn't for everyone, being a graphic designer requires a certain mindset that not everyone has. In addition to the personal, mental and emotional requirements, succeeding in an online school for graphic design also means having the right equipment to facilitate your learning.

Computer Requirements

Naturally, in order to take courses online you will need to have a computer and access to the Internet - preferably your own computer, and a high-speed Internet connection. Taking online graphic design school courses will introduce you to new types of software that you might want to purchase if you can afford it, if you cannot, your online school will likely have a remote system set up that allows you to access the software on their computers through the Internet and use it as if it were on your own computer. This is why a high speed Internet connection is so vitally important. These programs will likely be required in order to do or complete some of your assignments, in addition, if you are working in 3D art or animation, you will want to have plenty of storage space on your computer or a flash drive as the files for this type of work can tend to be rather large and take a good deal of space. If you are using a public system like a library computer, you will not have the ability to store your computer work permanently.

Personal Requirements

One of the biggest misconceptions out there is that you have to be a great artist in order to do well as a graphic designer. Little could be further from the truth. As long as you have an eye for color, basic shapes, and an understanding of contemporary design and interests, you can do well if you are willing to learn.

You may not know a single thing about how to use 3D Studio Max but you do not have to in order to enter design school - it is the school's responsibility to teach you these things as a part of your education - you just need to have a willingness to learn and apply your own understanding to the technology that is presented to you in order for you to use.

Finally, you should also be able to communicate well in the written form. Not all of what you will do or turn in for graphic design school is artwork or images. Sometimes you may be asked to write reports on the work of others or compare different products. Virtually all of your communication with your professors and classmates will be in the written form either via e-mail, discussion boards or chat.
